Sandcastle Competition, 2015

I designed this playful and colourful public artwork for the corner of Florence Street and Bay Terrace in the heart of Wynnum, Queensland. It was chosen from a group of proposed art works by the people of Wynnum through public vote.

Taking the form of a 'Bucket and Spade' this large sculpture directly references the Sandcastle Competitions held in Wynnum by the Telegraph and Courier Mail Newspapers during the 1930s. These sorts of events from Wynnum's rich history brought people to the area to engage with the beautiful coastline and appreciate the natural environment. Over time people have settled, each generation playing by the Bay with their 'Bucket and Spade', and gradually building Wynnum into the vibrant civic centre it is today.

Special thanks to Brisbane City Council for inviting me to tender for this project, the people of Wynnum for voting for my work, also to ArtPlusDesign for manufacture and install.
