Home Studio Task (Session 2)

In our session today we learnt that all the elements in a composition are part of an underlying plan, often represented by a compositional shape. The elements in an image may seem unrelated, but if you take any away you will notice the image no longer has the same power. If you would like to, please complete the images we started in class at home. They were all coming along beautifully, it would be great to check out the finished works.

The optional home studio task is to look at one of your favourite images, be that a drawing, photograph, painting etc. What type of composition does the work utilize? By that I mean is it balanced, asymmetrical, rhythmic, etc? Does the image have an underlying compositional shape that holds it all together? For example, an oval, triangle, or star?

If you want to take the activity to the next step, please take the image and alter it. You might print it out and amend it using collage, or digitally alter it on a computer, or draw it with variations. Please experiment with taking out a single element within the image and assessing whether you think the edit alters the power of the work. Please bring the results with you to class, so we can discuss them.

The holiday challenge for anyone travelling this term, is to take a photograph or make a drawing during your trip. Please bring your image to share with the group and explain what composition you chose and why?
